Pour le temps, at s'emploie avec une heure ou un moment précis (at 6 o'clock, at night, at the weekend), on avec un jour ou une date (on Monday, on 12 May, on Christmas Day) et in avec une période plus longue : un mois, une saison, une année, un moment de la journée (in July, in winter, in 1995, in the morning).
Pour le lieu, at désigne un point ou un endroit où l'on fait quelque chose (at the bus stop, at school, at work), on une surface (on the table, on the wall, on the second floor) et in l'intérieur d'un espace ou d'une ville, d'un pays (in the box, in the fridge, in London).
