A common mistake when you want to make progress in listening to English.

I notice that my students tend to lose motivation when they try to listen to more English on their own, as part of their routine.

Why does this happen? It's quite simple, they'll go for authentic English straight away, they won't understand anything, the reward system in the brain will be at a standstill and they'll give up.

If you're a beginner and you listen to BBC radio in your car to make progress, you'll get discouraged.

If you're a beginner and you watch your series in English with English subtitles, you'll get discouraged too.

What I recommend is that you go step by step, and look for podcasts at our level on spotify (there are tons of them).

Watch your favourite series in original version but with subtitles in French or English to start with.

You'll understand better, the reward system will be nourished in your brain because you'll be satisfied with your progress, and little by little you'll move on to the higher levels.

It's like sport: if your goal is to run a marathon next year and you're a beginner, you're not going to do a 3-hour race straight away. You'll have to work your way up through the levels so as not to get discouraged!
